Are you ready to detox your home on a budget? We share affordable ways to go green and use less chemicals!
I’m a single mom trying to manage a household and raising a teen all in my own. I don’t have financial help and essentially on a fixed income. As you can imagine, I am always looking for ways to save money!
I recently upgraded to an Energy Star appliance and hope that will help save me money in the long run.
Next year, a few of our bills are going up between $10-20 per month! I tried going over how/where I can cut expenses. The only expenses I could afford cut is buying less clothing and such for myself, which will take work.
I also decided to drop our thermostat a few more degrees, at least at night. I already keep our home on the cold side but at night, I decided to drop a few more degrees. We are covered up under blankets as it is. During the day, I just put on more clothes to stay warm. If it does get too cold, I may turn on the heat for about 20 to 30 minutes just to warm it up for a bit.
Back to basics cleaning
I love cleaning with eco-friendly products. Detoxing my home is an on-going journey for me. I will never be perfect and go completely green and environmentally friendly. But, I try! I try to buy natural beauty products as much as possible.
I started going green after my son was born. I didn’t want to expose his delicate skin to a bleached cleaned bathtub. I thought about the residue left behind from the bleach. He would soak in the tub!
I even discovered mineral makeup when my son was a baby. So I quickly switched my makeup to natural! Over the years, I eventually switched my skincare products.
These days, I am even more picky with my makeup, skincare, and hair care.
I prefer to use green-friendly cleaners because they do not irritate my allergies, asthma and health. I tend to get dizzy and experience headaches when I use the chemical cleaners.
Looking to detox your home? Start with small steps!
Detox your home on a budget
Remove shoes at the door
We’ve always taken our shoes off at the door. Not only does it keep our carpet and floors clean, but it keeps dirt, germs, and everything you step in throughout the day — at the door!
Naturally Clean & purify your air
Open your windows and allow fresh air in!
Add houseplants to your space
Start with easy to care for plants, such as snake plants, spider plants, pothos, ivy, and ZZ plants! I keep houseplants all over our home! Indoor plants help clean and purify the air we breathe. My son and I spend a lot of time at home, so it only makes sense to keep houseplants around to beautify our space!
Choose vegan & cruelty-free beauty products such as toothpaste, deodorant, makeup, skincare.
Go basic with cleaning
If you’re like me and on a budget, stick with the basics for cleaning around your home.
Natural Cleaning Scrub
Make your own cleaning scrub by combining baking soda & white vinegar. You can easily use baking soda and white vinegar as a basic scrub to clean your tub and shower, sinks, and countertops when needed!
Quick cleaning & disinfecting
For quick cleaning, use hydrogen peroxide or white vinegar.
For a basic cleaning and disinfecting spray, I keep hydrogen peroxide and white vinegar on hand. I add half white vinegar and half water to a spray bottle. I tend to use the same recipe with hydrogen peroxide.
