I’ve never had a Christmas tree in all of my adult life. However, now that I’m a homeowner and a single mom, I thought it is the perfect time to start my own little traditions! This is our second Christmas in our new home! It is time to decorate with our first Christmas tree!
Thanksgiving came and went. We had a nice and quiet vacation! The holidays are here. Now, we’re on another vacation! I love this time of year because it gives me a chance to recharge for the new year and look back on the current year.
Growing up, I remember my parents would always get a real Christmas tree! There were a few times when we went to cut down our own Christmas tree! When we got home, we’d decorate the tree as a family.
My mom would unpack the ornaments and my brother and I would hang them on the tree! Sometimes, my mom would direct us on where we should move the ornaments, especially if there were bare spots!
I love being a homeowner. I love having the stability, safety, and security of having our own place. It’s been a crazy couple of years since we’ve been back in California. We’ve been in our home for a year now.
Since I grew up in a house, I knew I always wanted to put roots down! It’s crazy that I had to be a single mom to have what I’ve always wanted! A home!
Now that we’re settled in, I figured it’s time to decorate and celebrate the spirit of Christmas!
I’ve been thinking about getting an artificial Christmas tree. My son’s teachers asked me a few times if we were getting a tree and I kept telling them that I hope to put one up!
I am a member of a few local groups and signed up with the NextDoor app. A few people started a thread of helping our neighbors and giving back. In other words, ask for what you need and donate what you have.
It’s been tough being a single mom and homeowner and decided to “ask” for one. I asked that if anyone had an artificial Christmas tree to get rid of (especially since many people upgrade their tree), I am willing to give their old tree a home. I was also open to receiving Christmas lights and ornaments!
It turns out, a friend I’ve known since elementary school had an artificial Christmas tree! Not only did she have the perfect size tree (4 1/2 ft), she included ornaments, tree topper, and a few other knick knacks!
Here is what our new Christmas tree looked like the first night I set it up. As you can see, I still needed to fluff it up a bit. You can see it was far from perfect looking. I was just so excited to have my very first tree in many years! I set it up all by myself, decorated it and enjoying the beautiful lights!
Here’s the one ornament I bought so far, the Christmas Pickle! I saw it at the dollar store. I actually ended up going back the next day to buy it.
Here is what our tree looked like the second evening after I set it up! That’s when I realized I needed one more string of lights! When I was at the dollar store, I also bought a white string of lights that is 5 ft long but 3 ft of lights. After I put it on our tree, I wished I had bought two!
The pre-lit tree is far from “perfect” but that’s the beauty of it!
Do you decorate for Christmas? What are your favorite holiday traditions?
